Inexpensive Professional Color Solution for Designers

The following guidelines are created for creatives and designers that want better color control at a low price. There are other solutions available that are more expensive and offer more capabilities, but this new solution sets a new price/performance bar for professionals with a limited budget. Think of it as a starter system to help you get control of your color for Display, Printer, and Lighting.

The professional approach requires tools that objectively quantify color.

ChromaSpot is Spectral Color Library — therefore, a spectrophotometer is an appropriate instrument. Today there are a lot of low-cost solutions on the market. We made a summary that should help better understand the best option for your needs.

It is essential to understand that Lighting used to evaluate color is the fundamental element of color perception. Therefore, we strongly recommend investing in instruments that can measure objects and lighting. When working with CC Capture, it is possible to evaluate colors in any lighting condition, but you have to be able to measure the desired lighting to begin.

In addition to being able to measure lighting, designers need to be able to measure their display to ensure the colors they are using are rendered accurately per the print and lighting for the job. Choosing an instrument capable of calibrating and profiling the display, the printer, and the lighting provides a complete solution to predict color results.

    1. ColorChecker Studio + ChromaChecker Capture

This is a great solution for designers just starting to work with color, for whom a limited budget is an essential element of decision-making. This is an excellent solution for students of design faculties, for whom the limitations of this instrument will not be very important, and they will gain experience.

    PROS:

    • Low-cost
    • i1 technology
    • Easy to install, easy to use
    • Can easily scan patches for fast printer profiling
    • The same instrument can measure lighting conditions and calibrate monitors, profiles, and calibrate printers

    LIMITATIONS:

    • Limited to M2 only (no UV)
    • ChromaSpot neutrals are M1-based – M2 measurements are not perfectly neutral as samples measured contained OBA's
    • Can't detect OBAa, fluorescence
    • Recommended patch size 20x20 mm
    • Requires a computer to operate – no smartphone support

    2. X-Rite i1 Pro3 + ChromaChecker Capture

This is one of the best solutions on the market. The third generation of the instrument is much faster and better correlated with others on the market. A versatile tool that allows you to measure not only objects but also to calibrate the monitor or measure lighting conditions. Supports both spot measurements and scan mode. ChromaSpot Library was built using this instrument, so it will provide the most accurate rendering of ChromaSpot colors.

    PROS:

    • The same instrument can measure lighting conditions and calibrate monitors, profiles, and calibrate printers
    • Very fast scan mode for printer profiling and accurate
    • Native ChromaSpot Instrument
    • M0, M1 and M2 M-conditions

    LIMITATIONS:

    • Requires a computer to operate – no smartphone application
    • Can't measure objects smaller than 6 mm (8 mm recommended)

    3. X-Rite i1 Pro3 Plus + ChromaChecker Capture

Version dedicated to textiles. Due to a larger aperture (8mm), this instrument can better measure textured objects.

    PROS:

    • The same instrument can measure lighting conditions and calibrate monitors, profiles, and calibrate printers
    • Very fast and accurate
    • Native ChromaSpot Instrument
    • M0, M1 and M2 M-conditions
    • Large aperture for textile and textured objects

    LIMITATIONS:

    • Requires computer to operate – no smartphone application
    • Minimal recommended patch size of 16 mm (10 mm minimal)

    4. Konica Minolta Myiro-1 + ChromaChecker Capture

A very good alternative - especially if Displays and Lighting are critical.

    PROS:

    • The same instrument can measure lighting conditions and calibrate monitors, profiles, and calibrate printers
    • Very fast and accurate
    • Wire or wireless connection (wi-fi)
    • Native ChromaSpt Instrument
    • M0, M1 and M2 M-conditions
    • Unique resolution of lighting measurements (5 nm)
    • The perfect candidate as a master instrument for CC Display

    LIMITATIONS:

    • Require a computer to operate – no smartphone application

    5. NIX Spectro 2 + CC Capture

Pocket-size Instruments that measure in M1, M2, and M0 with its robust metal case, sealed to protect from dust, make it perfect for everyone who has to capture samples out of the studio, outdoors, or in dusty industrial environment.

         PROS:
    • M0, M1 and M2 M-conditions
    • It can be operated in a dusty environment
    • Small, pocket size
    • Solid metal case
    • Can be driven by a smartphone

    LIMITATIONS:

    • It doesn't measure light and displays
    • It is not very easy to measure small objects
    • No scan mode takes a long time to build printer profiles

    6. Variable Spectro 1 or Spectro 1 Pro

Designers who need to measure shiny, textured, metalized, or any other complex objects may find these two instruments very powerful and the only solution for a limited budget. Unique geometry-based diffuse light in the chamber - very similar to the spherical geometry, which normally is extremely expensive. Very useful for measuring objects with mirrored characteristics, non-flat, or other non-uniform attributes that cannot be measured with a normal 45/0 instrument.

         PROS:
    • Offers unique geometry (SPIN or SPEX)
    • Best price/performance ratio
    • Small, pocket size
    • Wireless connection
    • Solid metal case
    • Pocket size
    • Can be driven by a smartphone (works with CC)
    • Can operate on USB (power supply)
    • It comes with 3 ceramic calibration standards

    LIMITATIONS:

    • It doesn't measure light and displays
    • It is not very easy to measure small objects
    • The internal battery has a limit of about 200 measurements per charge
    • It doesn't allow fast measurements - the instrument may delay the next measurement couple of seconds or so.
    • No scan mode takes a long time to build printer profiles
